One of my favorite hobbies is going vintage shopping. Whether it’s a well curated antique shop or a barn in the middle of nowhere, I can’t help but get a feeling of overwhelming excitement when I walk in! The possibility of finding something truly incredible always gets my heart pounding. My eyes usually dart around quickly in hopes of spotting a large gold or silver leaf mirror- that is usually what’s top of mind for me. I have found some really special smaller ones in my search but nothing huge (yet!). I also love to look for old oil paintings, gold or silver candlesticks, beautiful dish ware, flat weave rugs, great textiles and really anything else that catches my eye. I have found it helpful to “study” design books by designers and architects whom I admire. I have found that in doing so, I am able to spot things while thrifting that I may have overlooked but that are similar to something that I’ve spotted in a book. It may need to be painted or arranged with something else, but it can be a great way to get the look of a designer you love for a bit (or a lot!) less. I haven’t done as much vintage shopping over the past couple of years- sadly, some of my favorite vintage shops closed for good during covid and then I had a baby and well- I’m ready and itching to get back at it!
